[This article is part of a five-part series on neurodivergence, designed to help our team understand, support, and value the different ways we all process information.]
Open offices, bright fluorescent lights, and background chatter can overwhelm our senses. For neurodivergent employees (individuals whose brains process sensory details differently), these distractions are not just annoying. They can feel physically painful and exhausting.
The brain struggles to filter out these background noises. A hum from the AC or a distant conversation can completely block concentration. Simple changes can help everyone focus better and feel more comfortable.
- Manager Tip: Provide quiet workspaces. Let employees use noise-canceling headphones or adjust the lighting in their immediate work areas.
- Team Member Tip: Respect “Do Not Disturb” signals. If a colleague wears headphones, send an email or chat message instead of tapping that person’s shoulder.
