At UCOR, we handle safety proactively, not reactively. We aren’t complacent in how we operate—we continuously improve so we can operate above expectations every time on every project. That’s why we’re phasing out of our current Type 1 hard hats and transitioning to Type 2 safety helmets across the Oak Ridge Reservation.
While traditional Type 1 hard hats are designed to protect against impacts from above, Type 2 helmets provide additional protection from side impacts and better help reduce the risk of traumatic head injuries compared to Type 1 hard hats.
With an integrated chin strap that keeps the helmet securely in place, workers are better protected in dynamic environments where slips, trips, falls, or unexpected movement can occur.
UCOR doesn’t change equipment for the sake of change—we do it to maximize your safety. UCOR’s Nuclear Operations team went through a trial with Type 2 Hard Hats. We chose the industry’s best equipment and will be making these available to you. Continue to use your current Type 1 hard hats for now as we phase in the Type 2 hats. When organizations order new hard hats, UCOR will purchase Type 2 hats. This phased approach ensures we are responsible stewards of project resources while standardizing upgraded equipment across the site over time.
As cleanup work evolves, so should the equipment we rely on every day to ensure our workforce goes home the same way they came to work.
