Cleanup efforts continue at the Y-12 Alpha-4 facility. Crews have packaged 258 of 447 legacy waste containers that hold pipe, valves, and PPE that have been stored at Alpha-4 since the 1990s. Removing the containers will make room for upcoming deactivation activities.
Additionally, electricians have completed approximately 500 of 900 secondary isolations, while pipefitters have begun the secondary mechanical isolations. These ongoing efforts prepare the building for eventual demolition.
The Alpha-4 Facility (Building 9201-4) is a 561,000-square-foot, transited-covered structural steel and concrete facility sitting on 13 acres of land. It began operating in 1945 as a uranium enrichment facility using the electromagnetic separation process for uranium separation and enrichment until 1947 when the electromagnetic process was abandoned. Alpha-4 is one the largest high-risk buildings at the site.
