Message from Kenneth Williams, Lead Counselor at UCOR’s Mental Wellbeing Center
Change can feel overwhelming, especially when we try to force ourselves to think or feel differently. Instead of fighting what’s uncomfortable, we can learn how to make room for difficult thoughts/feelings while still moving toward the life we want to live.
Rather than asking, “How do I get rid of this anxiety?” ask, “How can I carry this anxiety and still take steps toward what matters?”
Through building mindfulness and acceptance skills, you can learn to notice your thoughts without being controlled by them. Focus on clarifying personal values—what truly matters in areas like relationships, health, and work—and then take small, consistent actions guided by those values to grow.
Change happens not because distress disappears, but because we build psychological flexibility: the ability to stay present and choose actions that align with our values.
Over time, this makes change meaningful, rooted in purpose rather than pressure, helping you move toward your values and start your journey toward the life you want to live.
