This past weekend, UCOR’s ORNL Nuclear Operations team tested the two Moyno pumps at Building 7856 to evaluate operational capabilities in preparation for moving liquid low-level waste (LLLW) from Melton Valley back to Bethel Valley for evaporation.
The two pumps at Bldg. 7856 were last operated in the early 2000s. Operations and maintenance personnel performed preliminary inspections of the equipment along with a flush of approximately 700 gallons of prime water through each pump, monitoring system pressure response, flow indications, and pump current. Verification of the Moyno pump operability supports UCOR’s approach to operational flexibility for the LLLW system while avoiding the pump replacement activities in high radiation and contamination areas.
“The operation went very fluid, controlled, and efficient,” DOE Facility Representative Billy Staggs said. “Thank you to the UCOR team and management for the hard work put in to make this project safe and successful.”
